Model Y or Tesla Pickup
That is the question … for me, this week.
Look, I’m already smitten. I LOVE my Tesla Model 3 and you can read about that here. It’s a portable living room. I can drop my daughter off to shop and watch Netflix while I wait, while not idling. I actually submit to society the notion that giving the homeless a Tesla Model 3 as a ‘tiny home’ isn’t maybe a terrible idea.
Anyways, I digress. November 21 is a big day, for me at least. We have a few cars in our driveway. The Tesla Model 3 (Shawniqua, the child I never had…), my daughters Honda Fit, our Mini Cooper Countryman and the Ford Explorer. Up until 7 days ago, the Mini was being sold and the Ford was going, now that has fully reversed. The Ford was big, handy but its gotta go and will be gone before the end of November.
So now we wait. Shawniqua stays, the Honda Fit is the ‘kid mobile’ and the Mini is on notice. I love it – but it will go sometime next year, for an EV … it is inevitable. But what will replace it? That is the question for me and my ‘deposit’ on November 21 will be decided that after the announcement.
Why I want the Model Y
Again, November 21 will be the deciding factor for me. The Y is the safe bet I think. Production is ahead of schedule, it will be 3 years newer tech (an eternity) than the Model 3, yet 75% of the parts will be the same – so it will come, and be relevant … and sell, FAST! Our kids are 15/17 and having extra seating will matter for a bit longer too – I see us with the 6 seater. Our house already has a Tesla charger and if I have any say in it, we will have Powerwalls and solar on our roof within 5 years. I could almost put down a deposit today. It’s taking every ounce of patience I have right now not putting down a deposit.
But…
Why I want the Tesla Pickup Truck
Damn. This could be big. I don’t need a pickup. People with pickups get asked to help others move. Fuck that shit. I have no plans to haul anything.
But … what if it is truly a game changer? A badass looking ‘cyberpunk’ looking, fast as hell, electric vehicle with range. And considering the base of it is effectively a skateboard, I gotta think it will come in MANY variations (and if it isn’t … Elon, you will have missed a glorious opportunity to shake things up). I mean, I don’t need a flat in the back to store shit – I need 1–2 extra rows of seating that goes down so I can put my drums in there on gig day. If you are going to change things – REALLY change them. I think (okay, hope) that this is the time to say “look – it’s faster than a pickup truck, more powerful than a pickup truck … but also *not* a pickup truck if you don’t want it to be). We will see and my deposit will go there, or on the Y.
Why I’m not buying a Rivian (I think)
Rivian is VERY interesting. But … they aren’t here yet, aren’t proven and feel like a bigger gamble than the Tesla (don’t get me started on the Boring company…). That and I already like the ‘Tesla ecosystem’ … much like the Apple ecosystem. While not as ‘grabby’ as in the past (there was a time that I felt the volume of apps I bought left me stuck with a vendor … but that has passed … everything is a service now, so the ‘app’ is no longer king). But it isn’t lost on me that every ounce of time I spend getting to know Tesla (the app, the website, the feel) takes time … I’m busy and I don’t see myself spending a lot of time learning another vehicles setup/ecosystem, quirks, etc. But I do like the sexy vibe Rivian gives that I might be ‘outdoorsy’ … hey, I’m outdoorsy, the BBQ is outside and I visit it almost weekly. But I’m not THAT outdoorsy.
